Chapter Twenty-Eight

The phone rings almost as soon as I end the call and the sight of Stef’s name has me immediately swiping my finger across it, bringing it to my ear and choking out. “Do you have him?”

“Yeah,” he answers shortly and I hear Alec shouting something unintelligible in the background. “Tell Mac to get here now.”

The phone goes silent the next instant and I swing my head around to Mac, gasping for a second before I can get the words out. “They got him.” My twisted heart is about to explode in my chest as it really hits me, and I cry, “They got him.” So shaken as what I’ve held on to all these months becomes a reality. “Stef said to come now.” I laugh through the fresh tears.

He returns my smile with a wide one of his own, eyes filling with relief as he stands and holds out a hand to me. “Let’s go get your man.”

I grab his hand, using it to jump up and quickly throw my arms around his neck. Squeezing tight and whispering raspily, “Thank you so much for coming when I needed you.”

“We are who we choose.” He brings his arms around me. “And we made ours years ago.”

Unable to wait another moment, I drop my arms and quip with a smirk, “No take-backs.” Tossing out over my shoulder while running to the SUV. “Even if I am a massive bitch sometimes!”

I see a hint of a smile play across his face as he follows me to the car, both of us quickly hopping in before he shoots down the road. Not even bothering with our seat belts. It would be useless for me right now anyway. I can’t even sit still in my seat, fidgeting and bouncing all over with every muscle in my body on edge. Hand ready to shoot to that door handle the second we get there. Needing to lay my eyes on him and hear his voice more than anything in my entire life.

I don’t even care what kind of shape he’s in. I know it’s going to be bad, but as long as he’s here. That’s all I need. Just to feel his skin against mine while his heart beats under my ear again. Every morning and night and noon, forever. I don’t think I’ll ever stop needing that sound after this.

The dirt road finally comes to an end and Mac swings right onto a long stretch of freeway that’s mostly empty, besides a few low-slung industrial buildings dotting the space here and there. I can hear my heart hammering in my ears, adrenaline pounding through it with each increasingly chaotic beat. Nearly frantic and about to ask him how much farther when he makes a sharp right turn into the parking lot of a particularly shabby looking one. He drives right through the metal gate that’s clearly been cut open and continues to the back of the lot behind the building.

I’m already grabbing the handle before the car even stops and am throwing myself out of it the second it seems steady enough.
